4 Noise Reduction Solutions for Your Data Center
Posted by Joyce Vinzani on Mar 23rd 2016
The whirring fans and monotone hum of a data center create noise pollution for your workspace. Just like the dripping of a leaky faucet, noise pollution from your data center can be enough to drive you downright crazy. These specific types of noise can heighten stress and drive down the productivity of employees.
Unwanted noise can come from a wide array of sources, requiring a wide array of solutions. Here are a couple ways to reduce noise from your data center.
1. Locate the source/Fix malfunctioning equipment
While some of the sounds that come from your data center will simply have to be accepted, many machines shouldn’t be making much sound at all. If they are, they could need servicing or replacement. Contact the manufacturer if a certain piece of equipment is creating more noise than normal. Oftentimes there is a quick fix. If the noise is not coming from problematic equipment, knowing its location can still help you contain it.
2. Acoustic Tiles and Baffles
Acoustic tiles and baffles help reduce noise pollution by absorbing the sound waves propagating in the area. Instead of allowing the sound waves to bounce around a room and potentially reverberate through its walls, acoustic tiles and baffles use specialized geometric shapes and materials to capture these waves.
3. Fans
When computers and other hardware overheat, they have to work harder to keep up with the tasks that they handle. This type of overworking can cause machines to make a number of odd sounds. To make sure this doesn’t happen, invest in quality fans to help keep your machines cool. Check out the Kendall Howard accessory catalogue to see some options. It is a small investment, but can go a long way. Sometimes, a malfunctioning fan will not only lead to an overheated machine, but it will make noise on its own.
4. Specialized Racks and Cabinets
While the above solutions can remedy a number of noise pollution issues, nothing will do a better job of ensuring silence in your data center like an acoustic cabinet. However, these can cost a couple thousand dollars. There are also a host of Kendall Howard cabinets and racks that can help with this issue.
