Demystifying Data Center Organization: Uncovering the Advantages of Rack Nuts
Apr 8th 2024
As the saying goes, “Data is key.” Over the decades, data has taken a new form: it’s primarily digital now. To better protect your server and data center, it’s vital to install rack nuts. Understandably, this may sound confusing at first. Why are rack nuts important?
Rack nuts allow for seamless equipment installation and component upgrades. By using the right type of rack nuts, you’re ultimately maximizing your data center. In this article, we will explain the advantages of rack nuts and why you should use them.
Everything to Know About Server Rack Cage Nuts
There is plenty to know about server rack cage nuts. Without them, server racks cannot properly operate. This is due to their function. Cage nuts allow for the installation of server rack components and provide additional attachment opportunities. Ultimately, they’re an essential part of the server rack installation process.
However, cage nuts do not come in just a singular variation. In fact, there are multiple types of cage nuts with unique design specifications. Depending on your server rack, some variations may be more compatible.
For example, there are three types of server rack cage nut shapes: J-type, Standard-type, and U-type.
J-Type
The J-type is unique in its design. The cage nut protrudes from the fastener, which folds halfway under itself. This allows for easier installation. Unlike other cage nut types, the J-type does not require the use of additional tools.
U-Type
Similar to the J-type, the U-type cage nut extends from the center. However, the U-type is different in its design. As the name implies, it looks like a “U.” The fastener fully folds underneath itself, allowing maximum security.
Standard Type
Lastly, there is the Standard-Type. It is called the “Standard Type” because it’s compatible with most server racks. Unlike the other two, the cage nut is secured within the steel spring cage. They are also fairly easy to install, as they usually snap into mounting holes.
What to Look for in Rack Cage Nuts
In addition to cage nut shapes, there are different cage nut sizes. Depending on your server racks, only certain cage nut sizes may be compatible. Therefore, it’s important to understand what they are. By doing so, you can ensure optimal performance and prevent equipment damage.
The three common cage nut sizes are 10-32, 12-24, and M6.
10-32
The 10-32 size is mostly used in North America. It features a diameter of 3/16 inches and 32 threads per inch. This should align with the type of rack screws you use.
12-24
Furthermore, the 12-24 cage nut is typically used for pre-threaded racks. It is slightly larger and has a diameter of 7/32. It only features 24 threads per inch.
M6
Finally, there is the M6 variation. This type of cage nut is mainly used outside of North America. However, HP servers also utilize this type of fastener. It is the largest variation with a diameter of 6mm.
A Note on Tools
When looking for cage nuts, you should purchase items that are easy to install. Most cage nuts do not require additional tools. However, a cage nut tool can be helpful for removing cage nuts that are no longer needed or were improperly placed.
