Kitting with RJ45 Couplers
Jul 19th 2023
Custom kitting services are just one of the benefits Rackfinity offers to get the most out of server room space. Many of those kitting jobs would be difficult, if not impossible, if not for the humble RJ45 coupler. Today’s topic is a closer look at custom kitting services and kitting with RJ45 couplers.
How RJ45 Couplers Make Kitting Services Easier
RJ45 couplers are an invaluable piece of equipment to help make kitting services set-ups possible. These connectors offer a variety of benefits, including low cost, solderless assembly of connectors and wiring, and quick custom production.
It also allows simple insertion and removal, easy field assembly, and customizing cables on-site.
What is an RJ45 Coupler?
An RJ45 coupler is a modular interconnection device. When paired with a cable, it delivers data communication to various electronic systems. They contain eight contacts and eight wire positions for signals or power, allowing four twisted wire pairs.
This makes it similar to other 8P8C connectors but includes an extra tab that other 8P8Cs lack. This tab only allows insertion in one orientation with a compatible socket.
RJ45 couplers are most commonly used to connect one internet-enabled device to another network device. This can be a PC to a server, router, modem, smart TV, gaming console, or other Ethernet protocol device.
The hardwired connection allows for greater data speeds, stability, and security. In addition, this makes it an attractive option for both personal and professional use.
How Custom Kitting Services Use RJ45 Couplers on Jobs
Custom kitting services can be invaluable in setting up a network using RJ45 couplers. To illustrate this, let’s take a look at the installation process and how the RJ45 coupler makes it better.
In addition to the connectors themselves, a technician will also need an Ethernet cable and an RJ45 crimping tool. Cut your cable to the required length using a cable cutter, then trim the ends with the crimping tool. Then, use wire strippers to remove about an inch from the cable jacket. Take care not to damage any internal wiring while doing this.
From there, untwist and separate the eight individual wire stands that comprise the cable core. Flatten and straighten them out as much as possible. Then, the cables are arranged side-by-side in a line in the correct order by color.
This order can vary depending on the project involved. For standard patch cabling, the order is white/orange, solid orange, white/green, solid blue, white/blue, solid green, white/brown, and solid brown.
Cut the wires straight across the end about half an inch from the cable sleeve. Then, hold the male RJ45 connector with contact pins pointing away from you and the cable wires. The keyed tab (plug clip) faces downward. Since RJ45s can only orient one way, this step is essential and reduces mix-ups later.
Gently push the arranged wires through the body until they touch the pins at the end of the connector. Once properly connected, seal the connection between the two with the crimping tool. After crimping, it’s ready to be tested for use.
This process is much easier with RJ45s and is even easier when performed by a certified expert. Rackfinity’s custom kitting service technicians are accredited in any equipment used on a project, including RJ45 connectors.
