Nuts and Bolts of Data Center Organization: Exploring the Benefits of Rack Nuts

Mar 18th 2024

The landscape of modern workplaces has evolved throughout the years. Nowadays, data is of paramount importance. A great way to solidify your data center is through rack nuts. They are small items that lock into the square holes on a server rack.

Rack nuts allow server racks to function properly. Furthermore, they allow for the installation of additional equipment. By doing so, server racks can perform at a maximum output.

So, let’s take a closer look at the different types of rack cage nuts and their benefits.

The Benefits of Server Rack Cage Nuts

Cage nuts feature a plethora of benefits. Any business that relies on its server rack must have readily available cage nuts—they are necessary for installation and modification.

As previously stated, server racks have different rack slots. These can be used to install additional equipment and hardware. To properly place said equipment, you must use cage nuts. For those unaware, a cage nut is surrounded by a spring steel cage. Typically, they feature two “wings,” which allows for latching. Due to its design, they can be applied quite easily. In turn, you can add or remove server rack components with ease.

In addition, cage nuts have a wide range of versatility. Along with them, server racks typically require rack screws. In certain instances, only one may be compatible. Luckily, cage nuts can convert square holes to threaded round holes. This allows for easy rack screw placement.

Moreover, cage nuts do not require special tools, and you don’t need to be an installation expert to place them. These items can be applied and removed with minimal effort. However, this does not mean that they are weak. In fact, it is quite the opposite. Cage nuts have great weight capacity. In addition, they are vibration-proof. This means that your server rack will be secure and durable.

The Different Types of Rack Cage Nuts

Cage nuts come in different shapes and sizes. Each may be compatible with various types of IT equipment. Therefore, it is important to understand the different types of cage nuts. By doing so, you can quicken the installation process.

Standard

First, we must explain the “Standard Type.” As the name implies, this is the most common type of cage nut. It is often recommended for its ease of use. They snap into place quite easily and will stay secure.

J-Type

Moreover, there is the “J-Type”. This type of cage nut gets its name from its unique design. The cage nut has a half-fold underneath. Similar to the standard type, it does not require any additional tools.

U-Type

Lastly, there is the “U-Type”. Unlike the “J-Type,” it has a full-fold underneath. This type of positioning allows for complete alignment.

Common Sizes

It is important to note that cage nuts also have differing sizes. Similar to rack screws, there are three standard sizes: 10-32, 12-24, and M6.

  • The 10-32 has a diameter of 3/16” and 32 threads per inch.
  • The 12-24 has a diameter of 7/32” and 24 threads per inch.
  • The M6 has a diameter of 6mm and 1 thread per mm.
